In case of bare looking lawn, it becomes important to take care of the land properly. When your lawn is looking thin or patchy you may add a grass layer on top to ensure beautiful green appearance. You may also need to aerate the lawn at the same time. Fall has been considered as the best time for the both aeration and reseeding. During this time, the atmosphere becomes relatively cold, but your lawn is still warm. Here are some tips and information to help you prepare your lawn for the winter months ahead.

What is Aeration?

The soil is perforated with small holes so that it becomes easy for the soil to soak water, nutrients, air and sun rays in perfect manner. Root system is generally strengthened in the process. Following the process correctly can result in a green lush lawn in the future.

What is Reseeding?

Seeds are placed on the lawn in the patchy areas or where you're in need of a thicker lawn. During the fall and winter months the seeds will germinate and take root so your lawn will be thicker and healthier at the start of the spring season.

Why fall is the Best Time for Aeration and Reseeding?

For Aeration:

Cool air and relatively hot temperature of soil makes a perfect environment for aeration. In this way, the lawn is often prepared for the cold and harsh winter. It becomes possible to access nutrient, air and sun in proper manner. Through lawn care, diseases in the soil can also be prevented. Especially diseases like mold that grow close to the thatch can be avoided quite easily. Due to aeration, absorption power of the root may also be developed.

For reseeding:

Sowing of the seeds can be done early fall for many reasons. Reseeding should be done at a minimum of two months before the snow fall. Talk to your lawn care specialist for more information about your specific area. Low percentages of diseases are encountered in the lawn during winter. Still, lawn care must be done correctly. Leaves cover your lawn during the fall season during this time and don't allow as much sunlight through to your lawn. This can help to seeds to germinate and take root.

Why You Should Not Consider Spring for Reseeding?

Both the warm air and moisture is needed for development of grass. Therefore, reseeding cannot be done during spring at all. Presence of weed can be found in the soil during this time more in comparison to the other season. Grasses have to compete to acquire adequate amount of nutrients in the process. Issues can be seen as a result.

Remember

Mowing of the lawn must be done too low as the seed can reach to the soil more easily. Don't forget to fertilize the lawn as well to help the growth of your new seeds.
