You brush twice a day. You floss daily. You even use the mouthwash your dentist recommends. Your teeth should be a flawless and cavity-free, right? The answer is not so simple. Sometimes, even the most rigorous dental hygiene routine can’t compete with other factors that contribute to tooth decay.

3 Surprising Reasons for Cavities

1. Tooth Shape

Teeth that are misaligned can be more prone to cavities if there places that are difficult to reach with floss or a toothbrush. The natural grooves in teeth can also make you more prone to cavities. The deeper those grooves, the harder it is to get rid of the bacteria that cause decay. Ask your dentist or dental hygienist to demonstrate the best brushing techniques for your teeth.

2. Genetics

dentistThe thickness of tooth enamel can vary from person to person, and it’s determined by genetics. If you have impeccable dental hygiene but are still getting cavities, it’s possible you inherited thin tooth enamel. Another factor affected by genetics is your immune system. Just as some people never seem to get sick, a strong immune system also allows a body to better fight the bacteria that causes cavities.

3. Diet

No matter how often you brush, a diet high in sugary or acidic foods can wear away at your tooth enamel. Any dentist will tell you that sodas and juices are particularly hard on your teeth. If you find that even after a rigorous dental hygiene routine, you are still getting cavities, consider cutting cavity-causing foods from your diet, or at least brushing immediately after you consume them.
