A beautiful and functional kitchen can be one of the most important and valuable aspects of your home. It is more than just a workspace – it should be a room you enjoy! To help your home remodeling dreams come true, Greg Gavin Construction, Cincinnati’s premier custom home builder, offers these tips for creating a kitchen you will love for years to come:

  • A crowded kitchen gets frustrating very quickly, so be sure to design wide walkways. They should be at least 36” across, and up to 42” around the cooking area.
  • Arrange the traffic area away from cooking surfaces, particularly if you have children. Kids can accidentally snag cooking utensils as they pass, thereby making messes and possibly getting hurt. You can also orient the refrigerator so it is accessible from both the traffic and cooking areas.
  • Corners can be especially troublesome. Make sure cabinet doors don’t block one another, and plan ahead for the swing of appliance doors.
  • Kitchen islands are beautiful, but decide on their function before you start building. If you plan on serving food on the island, make sure there is sufficient space for seating away from the cooking area.
  • For smaller areas, use lighter colors to give the impression of more space.
  • Cut your cleaning time with glass kitchen shelves, matte surfaces which conceal smudges, and flush-set sinks without a rim. You’ll thank yourself for it later.

Many homeowners know how their dream kitchen should look, but not all of them have thought about how it should work. To discuss your dream home with a respected custom home builder, visit Greg Gavin Construction online today.
