Retaining walls are both an attractive and practical way to landscape on a hill. They serve an important purpose by preventing erosion and allow you to build in some landscape design that would not have been possible otherwise. WH Major & Sons has served Mukwonago, WI, with experienced residential and commercial landscaping services since 1956.

Their landscaping experts have shared a few things about retaining walls that you should know before deciding to put one in your yard:

  • Know the Size: Short walls are easy to build, but once your wall reaches about four feet tall things get a bit more complicated. Have an expert approve the designs before starting the buildout to prevent possible failure of the wall. You may also be required to get a permit.
  • Get Creative With It: Retaining walls do serve an important purpose, but this doesn’t mean they can’t be attractive. Use high-end pavers and add natural curves to the wall to increase interest. As you design, think about how the wall will fit into the look of your current backyard landscaping.
  • retaining wallsBuild a Strong Foundation: Just like a house, a wall needs a strong foundation to ensure it won’t move later on. Gravel or another strong base should be added at least a few inches below ground level to secure the first row of pavers or stone.
  • Check the Level, Then Check Again: Use a level every step of the way before adding more rows. It’s easy to start off on a slight slope, which will result in a visibly and structurally uneven wall.
  • Prepare for Runoff: If you’re installing an irrigation system at the top of the retaining wall or have a slope that will run water to it, you should add appropriate drainage to the wall. It may be best to consult a professional for this.
