Paint is an inexpensive remodeling option that makes any interior or exterior surface like new again. Wood is the best cabinet surface for painting, as paint does not last long on laminate. If your kitchen cabinets could use a little TLC, learn to paint them the right way with the following tips.

Remove & Clean

Prepare the cabinets for painting by removing knobs and handles and covering the hinges with painter’s tape. Clean the cabinets thoroughly to remove dust, grease, and other contaminants with an all-purpose cleaner, such as white vinegar and water. Remove the contents of each cabinet and the items on the counters below them. Cover the counters with tarp or other applicable material to protect them from paint splatters.

Sand & Prime

Sand your cabinets with medium-grit sandpaper to create smooth painting surfaces. Use 150-grit sandpaper unless the cabinets are severely stained, in which case use 100-grit sandpaper. Wipe the resulting dust from the cabinets to avoid accidentally painting particles into them. Apply a latex primer or paint adhere product and refer to the manufacturer’s instructions regarding curing time.

Paint & Wait

kitchen cabinetsUse a gloss, semi-gloss, or satin finish paint on your cabinets. Avoid matte paints, as they are neither wipeable or long-lasting. Apply paint in sections with a high-quality angled brush, then use a roller to create a beautiful finish. Wait for the paint to thoroughly dry before applying a second coat using the same method. Remember to keep windows open throughout the painting process to breathe fresh air.
