Air Conditioning Service Pros Explain How a Central Air Conditioning System Works

As the name suggests, a central air conditioning system features a central unit sending cool air to other parts of the home. This unit is usually located in a room where it will be kept out of sight from guests, like a garage, basement, or laundry room.

air-conditioning-service When you adjust your thermostat to let in cool air, the central unit receives a signal telling it to begin pulling in air. While the air enters the system, a filter catches dust and debris. To avoid the need for air conditioning repairs, and to keep your unit running at peak efficiency, check and replace this filter on a regular basis.

The air is directed over a condenser coil, where refrigerant absorbs heat, cooling it. Once this step of the process is complete, the air is then forced through a series of ducts in your home, entering a given room through vents. Typically, this duct work is the same network through which warm air is directed when you operate your furnace.

While this is the description of how a typical central air conditioning system works, there are many different types of systems on the market, with some variations in how they function. Feel free to ask your HVAC contractor about the benefits of each.
