Learning how to read is the most important skill your child will learn in preschool. At Mendon Child Care Center in Mendon, NY, our preschool curriculum is theme-based. This means our instruction is organized each month around broad subjects like “space,” “nature,” or “communities,” while presenting foundational components in reading. Our staff, which specializes in early education, establishes literary groundwork in two ways: demonstrating concepts through leading instructor lessons and guiding preschool activities.

Instructor Lessons

Through lessons, our instructors establish foundational literacy by reading storybooks. They introduce the alphabet to preschoolers by teaching them how to recognize sounds through phonetic awareness and recognize upper and lowercase letters. Through read-alouds, our instructors systematically demonstrate how a book is read and understood. They read a story several times in different ways and teach basic print awareness — how words stream across from left to right and top to bottom. Our instructors also ask comprehension questions to help preschoolers understand and develop deeper reading skills.

Preschool Activities

preschool curriculumStudents take the concepts they learned and put them into action through games and hands-on, interactive activities. They are asked to read aloud with an instructor every day to learn new concepts and work through letters they may not understand. They play rhyming games to sound out short words in a way that makes reading playful and fun, as well as play games to identify and understand the letters and sounds of the alphabet. The storybooks included in our preschool curriculum feature a variety of characters and situations that engage young readers with their love of imagination and play.

Mendon Child Care Center is a daycare center for children between six weeks and eight years old, and our instructors are committed to instilling the foundations of reading in all students.
