FAQ: What to Expect During Tummy Tuck Recovery , Lincoln, Nebraska

Having a flat, well-toned abdomen is something many people strive for, but diet and exercise alone aren't always enough to achieve this goal. A tummy tuck, or what plastic surgeons call an abdominoplasty, improves your appearance by removing excess fat and skin. To help you decide if a tummy tuck is right for you, Dr. Mitchell J Henry, MD: Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery in Lincoln, NE, answers some frequently asked questions about the procedure.

4 FAQs: Tummy Tuck Recovery

What Happens After Surgery?

Once your surgery is complete, your doctor will dress the incisions with bandages. Small tubes may also be inserted under your skin to allow excess fluid or blood to drain. These are usually removed by your doctor within the first week after surgery. A special elastic bandage may be used to minimize swelling. As your healing progresses, you may be fitted with another compression garment designed to help support your abdominal muscles as they strengthen and recover.

How Will I Feel During Recovery?

You will experience discomfort and swelling in the days immediately following your tummy tuck. Your doctor will advise you on how best to alleviate pain and may prescribe medication to make you more comfortable. As your body heals, the swelling will decrease; however, you may continue to experience some soreness or fatigue for a few weeks after the procedure.

How Long Does It Take to Recover?

While every person is unique, most patients can resume light daily activity within seven to 21 days after surgery. However, to avoid straining your recovering abdominal muscles, you’ll need to avoid strenuous activity, such as exercise or sports, for about six weeks after surgery.

How Should I Prepare for Recovery?

If you’re recovering at home, assembling a few basic supplies before you undergo surgery will make your healing process easier. Suggested items include loose-fitting clothing that’s easy to take on and off, as well as ice packs, and extra dressing or bandages. Since you’ll need to limit physical activity, consider asking a family member or friend for assistance around the house while you recover.
