Spring is the peak season for landscape planting and installation in Western New York, and for good reason. Planting new trees and shrubs before the heat of summer sets in, gives them time to begin to establish roots systems now, when nights are cool and rainfall is more likely. Additionally, the choices that customers have in terms of colors, cultivars and sizes of trees, shrubs and perennials is generally never higher than in the 10 weeks from May 1^st through July 4^th.  So if you’re considering a new landscape bed  or renovating an existing bed to replace older over-sized or unhealthy plants, now is the time. 

Patios and sidewalks and retaining walls are not nearly as dependent on season but there are still reasons to consider them sooner rather than later. The biggest of these being the time of year that folks want to use them! Scheduling, designing and implementing a new patio or retaining wall takes time and if the goal is to be enjoying the new patio with a cold drink and a fire pit when summer arrives, then the scheduling and planning needs to begin now!

Lastly, with the tremendous wind damage that the area experienced last month a lot of folks are probably forced to address damage and or loss to trees on their property. Evergreens, which we depend on in many common landscapes for a degree of privacy were particularly hard hit. Tree selection and inventory is much better in the Spring and to a lesser degree in the fall than it is in the Summer. And planting before the heat of summer sets in is preferable to maximize the chances of a successful planting.
