The Hawaiian Islands are renowned for some of the most exotic and delicious fish on the planet, including Mahi Mahi and other gamefish. Hawaii is also the only place in the world where marlins weighing 1,000 pounds or more are caught regularly.

Yellowfin Tuna

This sizable fish is most abundant throughout the summer months. Found in subtropical and tropical waters around the world, the yellowfin features a brilliant-yellow anal fin, second dorsal fin, and finlets. It is commonly sold as ahi tuna and can weigh up to 300 pounds.

Blue Marlin

Its light-reflecting skin cells help it change color quickly, though it is usually blue with a silver belly. Females are always bigger than males and reach up to 16 feet in length. Marlins are also known for their distinctively-pointy fins and snout.

Mahi Mahi

Compressed bodies and singular, long dorsal fins make up the fish whose name means “strong” in Hawaiian. Fishing for Mahi Mahi is best in May, however you will still do well in June. The fish features a gold hue on its sides as well as blue pectoral fins and greenish-blue backs.

Ono

Ono, or Wahoo fish, are common in June and July. Their thin, long bodies are covered in silvery scales, while their backs are iridescent blue. They are known for incredible speed, sharp teeth, and reaching over 8 feet in length.

Skipjack Tuna

The Skipjack Tuna is another silvery-hued fish found in great numbers throughout the Hawaiian summer. It reaches a maximum weight of 76 pounds and is scale-free with the exception of its lateral line and the area behind the fish’s head.
