Novocaine is a local anesthetic used by dentists and oral surgeons to numb the gums and mouth during procedures. It is considered to be a safe form of sedation dentistry and is used during services ranging from oral surgery to routine dental care like teeth extractions and filling cavities. Like any other medication, this anesthetic does carry some side effects. While most are common and subside in a few hours, there are rare cases of more serious reactions.

The following side effects of novocaine may feel unusual, but they are normal:

  • oral surgeon Anchorage AkNumbness: The most common side effect of novocaine is lingering numbness after your procedure. This can last for a few hours until the anesthetic dissipates from the area. Your oral surgeon may caution you against eating or drinking hot foods and beverages during this time, as the numbness may make it difficult to gauge the temperature of your food and put you at risk for burns.
  • Difficulty Speaking & Swallowing: If you are experiencing any numbness following the administration of novocaine, it can become difficult to move your tongue in a natural way. As a result, you may have trouble swallowing or speaking clearly. This side effect is also and should subside within a few hours.
  • Itching & Swelling: Although it is less common, some people have an allergic reaction to the anesthetic. When this occurs, your tongue may feel itchy and swollen, and your throat may begin to close. You may also develop hives all over your body. If you believe you are having an allergic reaction to novocaine, seek medical attention immediately to avoid anaphylaxis.

The above side effects of novocaine are typically mild when they occur. However, there are some rare, serious side effects of this anesthetic, including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, chest pains, and seizures. If you are experiencing any of these side effects, contact your oral surgeon and physician right away.
