During the winter, your HVAC system has to work extra to keep you and your family comfortable inside your home. This is why most air conditioning services, including Daryl’s Heating & Air Inc in Branson, Missouri, recommend performing some basic maintenance on your system before making the seasonal change to the air conditioner.

5 Things to Inspect Before Turning on the Air Conditioner

1. Outdoor Condenser Panels

Your unit’s outdoor condenser has panels that protect the electrical connections. If these panels are missing or damaged, your HVAC is at risk of malfunctioning. Whenever you see this, it is best to call an air conditioning service before turning on your system.

2. Outdoor Coil Covers

While these covers help insulate the coil during the winter, they limit heat transfer in the summer months and should be removed before changing to the air conditioner. More importantly, forgetting to remove these covers can result in costly damage or the replacement of your whole system.

That large copper pipe on the back of your outdoor unit is known as the suction line. This line ensures cold refrigerant makes its way to the compressor in the outside unit, but if the insulation in this pipe is damaged, the outdoor unit might not receive the required amount of coolant. If this were to happen, your whole system could be damaged. Before starting your air conditioner, be sure to check for damage along this line.

4. Condenser Coil

Your condenser coil should be clear of all debris to transfer heat efficiently. Remove all dirt, trash, or vegetation from this area, and be careful when mulching in the spring to not apply too much around the base of your unit.

5. Air Filters

Chances are your air filter gathered a lot of debris and dust throughout winter. The beginning of spring is a good time to change or clean it. This will help your system work more efficiently and keep your home’s air clean.
