Send Holiday Cheer With Poinsettias For National Poinsettia Day on December 12th!, Brooklyn, New York

It’s almost the holiday season, and New Yorkers are already getting into the spirit. It’s truly the most wonderful time of the year, and things are just about to get merrier! December 12th is National Poinsettia Day, and Flowerworks is stocked and ready to spread the holiday cheer with a flower delivery of these lovely Christmas plants. And just in case you didn’t already adore poinsettias, here are a few fun facts that will make you love them even more!

  1. They're  NOT poisonous. Contrary to popular myth, poinsettias are not toxic or harmful in any way. A study at Ohio State University showed that a 50-pound child would have to eat more than 500 poinsettia leaves to be in danger. That’s a highly unlikely event to occur! Although they’re a beauty, poinsettias apparently taste terribly. Better just to enjoy their beauty than to snack on them!
  2. They're named after a man. Not just any man lent his name to these gorgeous Christmas flowers. The poinsettia is named after American botanist, physician and Minister to Mexico, Joel Roberts Poinsett. Poinsett discovered the plant in Mexico and introduced it to the US, when he sent the cuttings back home. The rest, as they say, is history.
  3. Another man made them famous. Although December 12th marks the death date of Joel Roberts Poinsett, the House of Representatives created National Poinsettia Day to honor Paul Ecke Jr. This man created a way to aid the growth of poinsettias with a technique that helped the seedlings to branch — and thus was born a booming industry!
  4. They're not always red. Today, poinsettias come in all different colors: white, pink, marbled and speckled. Even though red poinsettias are traditional for Christmas, you can enjoy this gorgeous flower all year in its other vivacious varieties.

With so many reasons to love poinsettias, it’s no surprise they have their own special day. Celebrate National Poinsettia Day with Flowerworks, and don’t forget to send some holiday cheer to your loved ones on December 12th.
