Cavities aren’t just for kids. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, about 92% of adults ages 20 to 64 have had cavities in their permanent teeth; this doesn’t include the 5% of adults in the same age range who have no teeth. The dentists at Legacy Dental Arts in Eagle River, AK, have been providing full-service dentistry to residents of the greater Anchorage area since 2007. Here, the staff explains two of the leading causes of adult cavities and what you can do to prevent them.

Receding Gums

Dentist-Eagle-River-AKReceding gums are one of the leading causes of adult cavities. Gum recession is usually caused by gum disease or overly vigorous brushing. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of Americans ages 30 and older have mild, moderate, or severe gum disease. Both gum disease and harsh brushing can damage the gum tissue and expose the sensitive roots of the teeth. Roots are covered by cementum, which is much softer than the hard enamel of the tooth surface. Because roots are not as well-protected, they are more susceptible to the effects of plaque buildup, which can lead to decay.

If you have receding gums, it’s especially important to practice proper oral hygiene. Brush gently at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss at least once a day. Also, visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and other preventative care.

Old Fillings

Many adults also have existing fillings. Over time, fillings can fracture, causing the seal between the filling and tooth to loosen. When a filling breaks, bacteria can accumulate in the cracks, leading to acid buildup and decay.

Maintaining your fillings is important in protecting your teeth from further damage. During regularly scheduled dental visits, your dentist can inspect your fillings and determine if any need to be replaced. Occasionally, a filling may break when you bite into something hard or are injured. If you notice a filling has broken, schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible to have it repaired. Sometimes, a dentist must replace a filling with a crown or perform an endodontic treatment. The endodontic treatment usually involves either a root canal or tooth extraction, after which the dentist replaces the tooth with a prosthetic dental implant.
