This spring, from April 3 to 7, National Work Zone Awareness Week is held to bring attention to highway worker safety. This year’s theme is “work zone safety is in your hands.” At Golden Alaska Excavating in Kodiak, the well-being of their employees is always the top priority. Their workers provide trucking, water and sewer installation, and excavating, and they are often driving near or working in construction zones.

To ensure the safety of everyone working near the road, the locally owned and operated company shares some facts and tips for driving through work zones:

  • Stay Alert: Most accidents in work zones are rear-end collisions, and they can be avoided if you are alert to what is going on around you. When you enter a work zone, refrain from using your cellphone, eating, or changing the radio stations. These distractions might seem minor, but it only takes a split second to lose your concentration before an accident can occur.
  • truckingWatch for Signs: Work zones are clearly marked and you should be given an indication if one is coming up. Watch out for the posted signs, how the traffic is moving around you, and any merge or lane closures. Being aware of what is going on helps you anticipate any changes on the road.
  • Prepare for the Unexpected: Work zones are fluid areas where equipment is shifting, workers are moving, and trucking vehicles are entering or exiting. Slowing down and paying careful attention to your surroundings will help you navigate through the work zone safely.
  • Don’t Speed: According to the Department of Transportation, most fatal work zone crashes occur on roads with a 50 mph speed limit or higher. Increased speeding fines for a work zone are put in place for a reason. Even if you don’t see active work happening or you have passed the area where highway workers are present, you need to stick to the work zone speed limit.

This spring, remember “work zone safety is in your hands,” and use these tips to stay safe on the road.
