If you made the decision to get braces for you or your child, you’re probably excited to embark on the journey to straight, beautiful teeth. The orthodontists at Roxbury Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry in Succasunna, NJ, believe you can make the adventure even more successful by following their guidelines for friendly eating with braces.

This includes avoiding a few key foods that could get stuck in your teeth or break your braces. Their dentists and orthodontic specialists break down what to stay away from and what you can eat instead below.

5 Foods to Avoid With Braces

1. Chewing Gum

Gum is a favorite snack food of children and teens, but braces don’t feel the same way about the sticky substance. You can keep gum from getting stuck to appliances and causing a dental emergency by avoiding it all together. Instead, keep your teeth and gums clean and fresh by brushing and flossing regularly and drinking plenty of water.

2. Popcorn

This air-popped snack is delicious but dangerous for braces. Keep kernels away from your mouth during treatment to avoid breaking brackets or teeth. If you need a delightful companion to your favorite TV show or movie, choose foods like cheese cubes, deli slices, or savory meatballs.

3. Nuts

bracesNuts are healthy, but they’re too hard for your delicate braces. If you like peanuts, pistachios, or cashews, opt for soft yet satisfying veggies, rich cottage cheese, or yogurt with fruit instead.

4. Hard/Sticky Candy

Avoid candy varieties like saltwater taffy, lollipops, and chewy chocolate. Instead, try fruit dipped in chocolate or pick up decadent gelato or ice cream to keep your mouth and braces safe.

5. Pretzels

Pretzels are also too tough for patients with braces. Leave these snacks on the shelf along with the chips and get your salty fix with garlic mashed potatoes, soup, or popcorn shrimp.
