If you've spent this past winter endlessly cutting down firewood, you may be relieved it's now springtime and you can finally rest your arms — and your chainsaw! However, before you put it away, L & R Power Equipment in Monroe, CT, wants you to keep a few things in mind.

Like all outdoor power tools, chainsaws require maintenance, and proper storage is part of that. Prior to storage, check the following tasks off your to-do list:

  • Clean the Fuel Tank & Carburetor: Either outside or in a well-ventilated area, empty the fuel tank and clean it out. Then, drain the carburetor to ensure the diaphragms don't stick together.

  • Disassemble the Chainsaw: Carefully following the directions as specified in the user manual, take your chainsaw apart. Once the chain and guide bar are removed, clean and spray a protective oil over them.

  • chainsawKeep It Covered: Once you've cleaned everything, protect the chainsaw from further dust and debris. L & R Power Equipment have high-quality contoured cases for chainsaws, as well as scabbards for the bar.

  • Store Indoors: The best place for your chainsaw is a cool, dry spot away from direct sunlight. Extreme weather conditions will wear down the protective oil, and direct sunlight can lead to embrittlement.

  • Lock It Up: In addition to keeping it in a case, you may also want to store your chainsaw in a locked cabinet or room. This way, it will stay out of the hands of young children and anyone else who doesn't know how to use it properly.

If the past season has shown you it's time to upgrade your chainsaw, L & R Power Equipment has a few recommendations online. They also offer a variety of other power tools such as edgers, lawn mowers, and leaf blowers. For more information, call them at (203) 268-8400 or visit their Monroe store location in person.
