A good toothbrush is a key component in your at-home dental care. Patients who don’t brush at least twice a day are more likely to develop cavities and gum disease. Unfortunately, failing to properly care for your toothbrush can make it less effective and contribute to the spread of illnesses in your home. Bradley M. Stewart, a local dentist in Olive Branch, MS, explains how to properly care for your toothbrush to stay healthy:

  • DentistKeep It Dry: Let your toothbrush dry between uses to prevent bacteria and fungi from collecting. You should rinse and shake your toothbrush after use, then store it in an upright position so it can fully dry.
  • Keep It Separate: Don’t let it touch other family members’ toothbrushes. Even the small amount of separation most toothbrush holders provide will prevent passing germs between you and your family.
  • Store It Properly: Store your dental care tools in a medicine cabinet if possible, so they are not subject to the germs spread by the toilet or from hand washing. Use a protective plastic case when traveling to prevent damaging the bristles. Let your toothbrush dry completely before placing it in a case to avoid a buildup of bacteria.
  • Replace It Regularly: Swap your old one out every three months, as old bristles get bent out of shape, making them less effective at removing plaque. If you get sick, get a new toothbrush once you recover. Continuing to use the old one could lead to reinfection.

Following these tips will not only prevent the development of gum disease or a cavity, but it will also reduce your risk of catching a cold, the flu, or some other illness. In addition to your at-home dental care, you should see your dentist every six months for a teeth cleaning and exam. Dentist Bradley M. Stewart and his team of hygienists can answer any questions you have and provide additional tips at your next office visit. Call them today at (662) 893-5800 to schedule an appointment.
