Sprinkler systems need a certain amount of water pressure to operate effectively. If the pressure is too low, your turf may not receive enough water and could end up drying out. But if the water pressure is too high, your irrigation system could become damaged. To correctly check the water pressure on your sprinklers, purchase a water pressure gauge and use it on all outdoor faucets to attain a proper reading.

If you have never taken the water pressure of your sprinkler system before, just follow these easy steps:

  • sprinkler systemFind a Water Pressure Gauge: Most hardware stores carry a variety of water pressure gauges for indoor and outdoor use. If you don’t want to invest in a gauge, you can easily ask an irrigation system service to check your water pressure the next time they complete an inspection.
  • Attach the Gauge on Your Faucet: Turn off all of the water inside of your home, including water used for appliances. Then, go outside to the outdoor faucet that diverts water into your sprinkler system. Attach the gauge to the spigot and take note of the measurement.
  • Calculate the Flow Rate: Water pressure is measured in either gallons per hour (GPH) or gallons per minute (GPM). This is called the flow rate, as it determines how much water is moving through your pipes. Once you have this number, you should check with your irrigation system service to verify the recommended flow rate for your sprinklers and make adjustments as necessary.
