Depression is a serious and widespread mental health condition, affecting about 350 million people around the world. When depression strikes, it's important to know some coping skills to tackle the challenging emotional terrain of this condition. Laurie Burns, LCSW-R, CGP, has more than 25 years of experience as a therapist in the Rochester, NY, area and has some helpful advice for handling depression.

3 Tips for Dealing With Depression

1. Distract Yourself

Distraction is a lifesaver for getting through the daily ups and downs of living with depression. Engaging in activities that keep your mind focused and busy alleviates the impact of depression and helps you feel better. Though you may not feel like doing much, even small activities you find enjoyable can be welcome distractions. Examples include playing with a pet, doing crossword puzzles, taking a short walk, or calling a trusted friend or family member.

2. Exercise

therapistFor many people living with depression, undertaking any vigorous exercise seems like an uphill battle. But studies show exercise is essential for brain health. Engaging in regular exercise releases endorphins that make you feel better, reduce pain levels, and energize your body, mind, and spirit. Any exercise that gets your heart rate up, for even a short period of time, is helpful.

3. Rely on a Support System

It's crucial to know you are not alone in battling depression. Never hesitate to reach out to family, friends, or a therapist and ask for help. Sometimes, help is as simple as grabbing a cup of coffee together or going to a movie. Those in your support system care about you, and they will rise to the occasion to help in any way they can.

Let a caring, compassionate therapist give you the support and resources you need to weather depression. If you're struggling with depression, contact Laurie Burns, LCSW-R, CGP. Schedule a personal counseling session by calling (585) 734-6826 or reaching her through her Facebook page.
