Top Five Myths about Flu Shots, Manhattan, New York

Flu Season, officially starting in October and lasting through May, is a source of frustration and discomfort for thousands of Americans each and every year. With symptoms like sluggishness, fever, sore throat, nausea, body aches, chills, and congestion, the flu can wreak havoc on your body and leave you feeling run-down and incredibly tired.

Luckily, getting a flu shot can help prevent catching this illness and save you the attendant headache that comes with it. Yet, every fall a large portion of the population opts out of the shot because they believe it will cause more harm than good. At CityMD, we are here to explore these myths and expose the truth.

MYTH #1 – A flu shot can actually transmit the flu.

TRUTH – While you may experience some flu-like symptoms (soreness, headaches, light fevers), you cannot actually catch the flu from the vaccination, since the virus it contains is no longer live.

MYTH #2 – If you were vaccinated last year, you’re already covered this year.

TRUTH – Since flu strains change annually, you are not protected from this year’s version of the flu, if you got a shot last year. You need to get shots every year to ensure that you are well protected. Also, your immunity fades over time. So even if this year’s strain is identical to last year’s, you still need to get a shot.

MYTH #3 – The flu vaccine is not suitable for pregnant women.

TRUTH – The opposite is actually true. It is recommended that all expecting women get vaccinated because the antibodies will reach the fetus and help protect them against illnesses.

MYTH #4 – If you haven’t already been vaccinated by November, you’re too late.

TRUTH – While it’s true that you should get vaccinated as soon as the shot is available, there is no timetable that you need to strictly follow. You may want to rush out nonetheless because then you’ll be protected all season long, but don’t stress it if you can’t make it to the clinic before mid-fall or early winter.

MYTH #5 – Flu shots don’t really work that well.

TRUTH – While there is no 100% guarantee that a flu shot will prevent you from catching influenza, it definitely reduces the likelihood of illness. Since there are several different flu strains going around at a given time, there is still a possibility, but it is a lot less likely.
