Getting a flat tire is a common experience most drivers have dealt with at one time or another. The air may slowly leak out of your tire as you are driving around, or your tire may suddenly pop and deflate. Although getting a flat may be frustrating in the moment, the solution is usually to change the tire on your own or contact a roadside assistance service to perform the tire change for you. Although not every flat tire can be avoided, it is important to know some common causes of flats. Here are three common reasons you may get a flat and need a tire change.

1. Valve Stem Leakage

The valve stem on your tires may become dirty or damaged over time. When this occurs, it may cause air to slowly leak out of your tires and eventually cause a flat. While a tire change can get you back on the road, you should also purchase a new valve stem in order to keep the problem from happening again.

towing2. Road Damage & Debris

Driving on roads with lots of potholes, uneven surfaces, and debris can wreak havoc on your tires. Debris such as sharp rocks, nails, or industrial staples can pierce small holes in your tires. Roads with deep potholes or uneven surfaces may place too much impact on your tires, causing them to pop or tear.

3. Wear & Tear

Tires may also become damaged through overuse. Tires should be rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles to allow them to wear evenly. However, even with careful driving and routine rotations, tires will still eventually wear down and go flat over time. Having your tires changed every 25,000 to 50,000 miles will prevent this.
