Earning your driver's license is one of the most exciting moments of your teenage years. Before you achieve this milestone, you need to pass a road test. Qualify for Your Learner’s Permit

As soon as you turn 16 years old, you are eligible to take the written learner’s permit test at your local DMV. You can prepare by studying the Driver’s Manual for the State of New York and take the accompanying practice tests. When you go to the DMV, be sure to bring the completed permit application, your Social Security card, proof of your identity and date of birth, and payment for the permit.  

Take a Pre-Licensing Class

After you pass your permit test, you must complete a pre-licensing class (or a high school driver education course.) This five-hour pre-licensing  class is a standardized course that goes over important information you need to know as a new driver. You will receive a certificate to verify your successful completion of the course. This certificate is needed to schedule your road test; you will also need to bring the original for your license examiner to see.

Practice on the Road

The most important part of preparing for your road test is to make sure that you have enough practice. If you are under 18 years of age, you are required to have at least 50 supervised hours behind the wheel, with 15 of these hours spent driving at night and 10 of them in moderate to heavy traffic. During these practice sessions, focus on skills like good vehicle control, excellent observation, understanding right-of-ways, and traffic signs and signals, K-turns and parallel parking.
