Switching to a brand-new day care can be a stressful experience during the developmental stages of early childhood. Tiny World Child Care of Brookline, MA, wants to make the transition easier on your child (and you). They’re here with five tips to ensure a smooth transition to a new day care.

Day Care Transition Tips

1. Prepare Your Child for the Move in Advance

Don’t spring a new day care center on your child without warning. Explain to them early and often that there’s a change ahead, and allow them time to process the news. It’s best if you can bring them to the new center for a visit before the move. This way, they can meet their new caretakers and friends and take a look around.

2. Have the Old & New Day Care Centers Communicate

Child care providers want to know how to best meet your child’s needs. Put the old and new caregivers in touch, or bring notes from the old day care so the new one knows what to expect from your child developmentally.

3. Let Your Child Say Goodbye Properly

A fond farewell is important for a sense of closure. Give kids a chance to say goodbye to the people and places they’ve grown accustomed to.

4. Plan for an Adjustment Period

As your child settles into their new surroundings, there could be extra tears and separation anxiety. You may need to budget time for a morning meltdown or be prepared for a midday phone call. Thankfully, this too shall pass.

5. Do Your Research on the New Day Care Center Before You Make a Choice

Choosing the right day care for your child will go a long way toward an easy adjustment. In a loving and active environment with attentive caregivers, your child will thrive before you know it.
