Being a coin collector is both fun and rewarding. Every coin in your collection represents a piece of a country’s culture and history. But, if you’ve never collected coins before, how do you discover these stories for yourself? That is where Coins Plus can help.

As Cincinnati’s leading rare coin dealer, we love sharing our passion with other collectors, both old and new. So if you are interested in coin collecting, but aren’t sure where to start, here are our top five tips.

5 Steps to Becoming a Coin Collector

  1. Start Small

Seasoned numismatists put a significant amount of time, money, and effort into their hobby. For new coin collectors, however, this dedication can be daunting. Thus, we recommend that beginners start small and get a feel for the hobby before fully committing to it. For example, you could collect all 50 state quarters or the Presidential dollar series.

  1. Purchase an Album

Once you’ve amassed a few coins, the next step may be to purchase an album. This inexpensive item will not only keep your new collection organized but it will also introduce you to proper handling techniques.

  1. Explore Numismatic Literature

Half the fun of being a coin collector is learning where your coins fit into history. So when first joining the hobby, it’s a good idea to explore a few reference books. If you want to see a reference book before purchasing it, we may have one in our extensive library for inspection. We proudly have the most extensive numismatic library in the Tri-State area.coin collector

  1. Join the Local Coin Club

The Cincinnati Numismatic Association is the local coin club that has been serving coin collectors in the Tri-State area since 1930. Here you can meet other local collectors and hear our educational presentations to learn more about your new hobby..

  1. Consult One of the Rare Coin Experts at Coins Plus
