“GST has helped me understand that you can't be afraid to try, learn and collaborate with your professors and fellow students. It will give your work a new outlook and open up doors to achieve anything you want in life. You just have to be willing to take the first step.” So states Joseph Cardenas, a New York City-based Production Designer for American Express and proud student of Touro College Graduate School of Technology (GST).
Before enrolling at Touro GST, Joseph was employed as a designer. Joseph’s professional background was largely in print media, and he felt it was time to learn how to implement web applications as well. According to Joseph, UI/UX Design, Responsive Design, and Mobile App Design have revolutionized the design industry, not only by overhauling what a designer does and creates every day, but shifting their approach to capturing viewer attention as well. Additionally, these new routes in design have opened up numerous ways for designers to explore new creative endeavors, and Joseph was anxious to seek these exciting opportunities at Touro.
Joseph, who will graduate with a Master’s degree in Web and Multimedia Design in Spring 2015, describes his learning experience at the graduate school as “truly amazing.” Throughout his time at Touro, he states, professors helped him understand computer programming languages like HTML5 and CSS, and improve his abilities to work with software programs like Flash and After Effects. However, he feels that the opportunities to research, sketch, and prototype a project from start to finish, combined with studying the psychology behind a user interface design, have been the most valuable components of his studies thus far. Among the other innumerable highlights of studying at Touro, states Joseph, are the convenient class schedules that enable him to be home and spend time with his newborn son, and the wonderful assistance he receives from classmates, teachers, and administrators.
His advice for current students tired of struggling to find employment? “Do the work, keep pushing the envelope of creativity that you love to do, and keep learning and practicing the software. It will all come together when you least expect it.”
