The Differences Between Tacos, Burritos & Fajitas

The similarities of tacos, burritos, and fajitas make it harder to process the differences, especially when your mouth is watering. Here's Fonda La Paloma's guide to each dish as well as what sets them apart:

Tacos

Tacos are one of the most beloved Mexican dishes, and in recent years, multiple variations of the recipe have been invented to offer seasonings and styles reflected in nearly every other type of cuisine in the world.

At its core, a taco is composed of a small wheat or corn tortilla with the desired filling in the center. The main part of the filling is typically a type of meat like beef, chicken, or seafood that is topped with veggies, cheese, and a garnish of cilantro or guacamole. The tortilla is then folded around the filling to make it easy to eat without silverware.

A burrito's base is also a tortilla, but instead of corn, it is usually wheat. Also similarly to a taco, the filling is centered into the tortilla, but burritos are wrapped around the filling instead of folded.

The filling of the burrito is usually meat or beans, but filling options have expanded to include rice, veggies, and garnishes. Once they've been filled and wrapped, they can be fried, steamed, or eaten plain depending on your chosen Mexican restaurant style of preparation.

Fajitas

Unlike burritos and tacos, the meat is the focus point of fajitas. Traditionally, the meat was beef, but many restaurants offer different options, such as chicken or pork.

The meat is marinated before being grilled with onions and peppers. It is typically served with tortillas on the side along with an assortment of garnishments.
