Nothing is more exciting than adopting a new pet, whether it’s a feisty kitten or a laid-back older dog. Regardless of if it’s your first animal or a new addition, remember that this can be an overwhelming experience for any pet, as they are entering a new home with a variety of unfamiliar faces.

If you’re about to adopt a furry friend, veterinary hospital Animal Care Center in Elk Grove, CA, has five tips for welcoming your new family member.

How to Welcome a New Pet

Discuss Responsibilities Ahead of Time

If you live with others, make the transition as smooth as possible by discussing responsibilities. If you are adopting a dog, figure out how you’ll handle training, as well as who will be walking them every day. If you’re welcoming a kitten into your home, discuss how often the kitty litter should be cleaned, as well as a feeding schedule.

Take Your Time Making Introductions

As exciting as it can be to have a new pet, chances are they might be a little nervous about meeting so many humans at once. Take your cue from their body language. If they are jumping all over you and eager to lick the face of every person they come into contact with, let them continue the fun. However, if they are backing away or trying to hide, avoid swarming them and give them some space until they can adjust.

Be Mindful With Young Children

If there are young children in the house, have conversations about proper pet manners and animal care before they arrive. Teach children how to approach a pet before they touch them, such as letting them sniff their hand before petting. Kids should also be reminded to respect their pet’s personal space when eating, as well as not pulling tails. This is particularly important with cats, as they can be prone to scratching or biting when harassed.

Stock Up on Basic Supplies

Make sure you won’t need to make a lengthy pit stop at the pet store or leave her alone at home right away, and stock up on the essentials before her homecoming. Some basics include bowls for food and water, age-appropriate food, a leash, a comfortable bed and cage, toys, and a kitty litter or pee pads.

Make Sure They Go to the Vet

Establish a relationship with a reputable pet clinic or veterinary hospital in your area. After you bring your new pet home, take them to see the veterinarian to ensure they are healthy and up to date on all of their vaccinations. Ask your vet how often you should be bringing your new pet in for checkups.
