We all have certain expectations for how things will unfold and sometimes we encounter an unexpected curve in the river. Usually the current is faster, and we must rely on reactions that have not been preceded by a great deal of thought. But, we have to remind ourselves that things do tend to work out.

This is the case of a teenage pregnancy. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Medicine in the United States two out of five teens will become pregnant, and four out of five of those pregnancies were not planned. That news arrives with shock and often not a welcomed surprise; it brings turmoil and agonizing dilemmas for the teen.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) is well known for shaping guidelines to direct children’s dental care. It’s not surprising the AAPD has set forth recommendations for the pregnant adolescent.

From those we learn it is best for the teen to seek dental care during her first trimester (the first three months of the pregnancy). This allows the dentist to review the teenage mother’s medical history, complete a comprehensive dental examination, and gather information about dental  care, current toothaches, current diet, and nutrition.

The dental team will focus on oral conditions, oral hygiene practices of brushing, flossing, and use of health accessories such as the waterpik. Any interventions will be best completed during the second trimester (months 4, 5, or 6 of the pregnancy).

We are here at Dr Teresa Wade to help during this time of adjustment. Let us strengthen and encourage you as we keep everyone healthy. Come see us in that first trimester at 612 Hospital Drive, Andrews,TX 79714. Or call us for an appointment at (432)523-7782.
