If your dentist informs you that you need crowns, you might be unsure about what exactly that means. Crowns are permanent devices affixed to an existing tooth to cover a damaged, weakened, or discolored tooth. Traditional dental crowns are made with either ceramic or porcelain, as these most closely match the natural color of teeth. Your dentist will evaluate your situation to determine which material is best for your mouth. The procedure will be completed over the course of two trips to the dental office.

crownsDuring the initial visit, your dentist will closely examine the tooth to ensure it’s healthy enough for the procedure. This might involve taking X-rays to inspect the tooth’s roots and bone. If there are signs of decay or other potentially harmful damage, your dentist may suggest a root canal prior to installing a crown.

If all looks healthy, the gum surrounding the tooth is numbed. The tooth is then filed down to accommodate the incoming crown. In some cases, the opposite is necessary — the crown may be used to cover a tooth that is broken or missing, so your dentist will use a special filling to “rebuild” some extra tooth to hold the crown. Once the tooth is shaped appropriately, your dentist makes an impression of your tooth, either with digital equipment or putty.

Before you leave, your dentist will create a temporary cover for your tooth so the new tooth will not be damaged while you wait for your crown to be created. It usually takes about two weeks for a dental lab to design your crown. When it arrives, you’ll return to the dental office for your second visit. The temporary cover will then be replaced by the crown, which your dentist will check to ensure it fits properly.

There may be a short adjustment period as you get used to the sensation of having a crown in your mouth. This will pass with time, though, and you can treat your crown as you would a regular tooth.
