If you live in the country, off the city’s grid for water and waste, a septic tank is likely your only means of sewage treatment and waste disposal. A septic tank is a type of onsite sewage facility—essentially, it’s a miniature version of a city waste treatment plant. Bacteria develop within the tank to decompose waste, before draining out into a leach field as bio-organic material. This tank requires regular preventative maintenance so that it can continue to operate efficiently. Carolina Pipe Cleaning, Rockwell, NC’s most complete sewer treatment, drain cleaning, and plumbing company, highlights a list of things you should know about your septic tank.

Look for Signs in Your Yard

Septic tankYou can get a good sense of how your septic tank is performing by taking a walk in your yard. Does the ground feel soft and muddy, even though it hasn’t rained recently? If so, you might have a problem. You should also be wary of lush, green grass above your septic tank—that is a probable sign that nutrient-rich water is pooling in the field, and not draining properly.

Be Careful What You Flush

For your septic system to continue operating properly, you must avoid flushing cloggers and bacteria killers down into it. It’s advisable to not flush diapers, baby wipes, cat litter, and feminine hygiene products. Additionally, household cleaning products and bleach can kill the bacteria and microorganisms that are essential to breaking down waste. If possible, send only toilet paper and human waste down the pipes.

Pump Your System

What goes in, must come out. Experts recommended pumping your septic tank every three to five years but look for tell-tale signs—like backups, slow drains, or gurgling pipes—that indicate your system needs to be pumped.
