http://www.wadefamilydentistrytx.comResearchers in England have developed a technique which triggers cells in the middle of our teeth to grow more tooth. The findings were reported in Scientific Reports this year. 

The method utilized is not foreign to dentistry and the drug is no stranger either, since it is one already approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The mechanism key is stimulation of the stem cells located within the tooth’s pulp to repair dentin destroyed by a large cavity.

This marvelous reactivity of the tooth is to build  back the area of the tooth called dentin which covers the tooth’s pulp (nerve and blood supply). Currently, the dentist utilizes several techniques such as apply Calcium Hydroxide near a hole leading nearly into the pulp (we call an Indirect Pulp Cap) or actually into the pulp (we call a Direct Pulp Cap). will inspire the tooth to build its own little wall (called Secondary Dentin). Sometimes this is also referred to as Globular Dentin, or Reparative Dentin because it is formed in globules and it repairs the area near the pulp wall. 

This new research is exciting for several reasons. All of these, the new and the old decrease the potential of needing a root canal, but this new technique is different because the material is completely consumed by the tooth. There is no film or soft portion remaining after the dentin formation; this lends itself to a more durable restoration of the tooth when it is under function.  

All of these procedures usher in less tooth sensitivity at home with cold or warm drinks or food. Yeah! And, all of these are cost reducing techniques that most patients don’t even know we are loving on them as we apply these helpful techniques.
