If you’ve been awakened by a leak in your plumbing in the middle of the night, you know the sinking feeling of trying to decide just how bad this emergency is. Is it worth interrupting your sleep? Worth calling an emergency plumber? While most problems can wait until morning, there are a few issues which require immediate intervention by an expert.

Murphy’s Plumbing Services in Mebane, North Carolina, recommends you make that 2 a.m. call in any of the following circumstances:

Overflowing Toilet

If water is backing up a pipe and causing your toilet to overflow, your problem can get very serious very fast. An overflowing toilet is a horrible problem to have any time of the day, but in the middle of the night, it all seems so much worse. Most homeowners don't have the necessary experience to address this, so a quick call to an emergency plumber is the best course of action.

emergency plumberClogged Drain

What’s true for toilets is also true for sinks and tubs: if it’s clogged badly enough water is coming back up, you need an emergency plumber immediately. Not only is there a risk of water damage, but the regurgitated wastewater can be a health hazard. The exception to this is if it’s not overflowing the sink. So long as the water is manageable, it can wait until the following morning. While waiting is certainly inconvenient, it shouldn’t be considered an emergency.

Busted Pipes

This one is in the same vein as a drain flowing the wrong way. This much water can cause significant damage to your property, and it’ll only get worse the longer you wait. Turn off the main water valve at the house if you know how, and then call a plumber immediately. For frozen pipes, you still need the help of a plumber; you can damage the pipes by trying to heat them yourself, and it won’t solve the insulation problem that allowed them to freeze in the first place. If the break to your water line is located before it enters your home’s meter or wall you may have to contact the water company, too, because they may be needed to turn off your water at the sidewalk or street.
