Owning a pool is a major responsibility. One of the most essential parts of pool maintenance is keeping a close eye on its filters. The filter is responsible for removing impurities from the water, including grass, dirt, hair, and sunscreen, so the water stays clean. If the filter isn’t working, you might not realize it until the pool water starts looking cloudy and dirty.

Honolulu, HI pool serviceA diatomaceous earth (D.E.) filter is designed to trap particles not otherwise visible to the naked eye. If it stops working, you might notice that the filter powder used to trap the debris is being released into the pool water. It uses a pressure gauge to determine when it’s time to be backwashed to get rid of debris.

This is usually when it measures between eight to 10 pounds more than its starting pressure point. After the filter is backwashed, the dirt is eliminated and fresh powder is applied. Note that if the pressure gauge shows a high reading even after you’ve cleaned the filter, it could be an issue with the gauge itself.

Sand filters are also designed to be backwashed when their gauges show a reading over 10 pounds. These filters actually get more efficient the more debris they collect and require the least amount of maintenance. In fact, you might not need to inspect a sand filter for several years. If you notice that the pool is getting dirty and you find yourself backwashing far more often than usual, it could be a sign that the filter’s sand quality is diminished and should be replaced.

Filter cartridges are replaced every three to five years. If the pressure gauge reads 10 pounds over, it’s time to backwash the filter. After cleaning, it should be left to dry for at least a day. Pool maintenance for this type of filter is minimal—the cartridge should be replaced after 15 cleanings.
