Uterine fibroids are quite common---about 20% to 80% of women will develop fibroids by their 50th birthday. Fortunately, the vast majority are benign, but some can cause serious symptoms and complications. The team at Women’s Wellness Center of New York are experts in women’s health issues, including fibroid tumors. Here, they explain what fibroids are and when they may be detrimental to your health.

4 Things to Know About Uterine Fibroids

1. Fibroids are Muscular Tumors

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyoma or myoma, are muscular tumors that grow on the wall of the uterus. They may grow as a single tumor, or there may be several. Size ranges from as tiny as an apple seed to as large as a grapefruit.

2. Uterine Fibroid Symptoms

Uterine-Fibroid-NY-New-York-CityMany fibroids are asymptomatic, but women who do have symptoms often find the condition difficult to live with. Symptoms can include pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding (including heavy menstrual bleeding), pain during sex, and lower back pain. Fibroids can also place uncomfortable pressure on the bladder, resulting in frequent urination. In rare cases, fibroids may even be large enough to expand the abdomen, making a woman appear pregnant.

3. Fibroids & Pregnancy

Most women with uterine fibroids have healthy pregnancies, though fibroids can cause complications during labor. Women with fibroids are six times more likely to require a cesarean section. The baby may also not be positioned well for delivery because of the fibroids, or the labor may fail to progress. There is also an increased risk of pre-term delivery and placental abruption in women with fibroids. If you're planning to become pregnant and you have fibroids, talk with your OBGYN to discuss your risks and options.

4. Fibroids Are Rarely Cancerous

The chances of developing a cancerous fibroid are extremely rare, less than one in 1,000; cancerous fibroids are called leiomyosarcoma. Doctors don’t believe such cancers arise from existing fibroids. If you have fibroids, you are not at an increased risk of developing other types of uterine or other gynecological cancers.

Though many women with fibroids experience no side effects, there are plenty of treatment options available if you do. Your gynecologist can help you chart the best course of action depending on your symptoms, the size and location of your uterine fibroids, and other health factors.
