Every unique monogram begins with an idea for a custom design. Once you have the idea ready, there are a few different methods to bring the design to life. Heat transfer uses a special type of vinyl that can be cut into the design and applied by heat to the garment or material of your choice. For over 30 years, the creative professionals at The Monogram Company in La Crosse, WI, have used state-of-the-art technology to provide a wide range of custom designed products, including t-shirts, banners, and team uniforms.

Here, the monogramming experts explain how vinyl heat transfer works to bring your custom design to print:

Process the Image File

In order to process the design, the printing experts will use a vector file to get it ready for the machine. If your drawing is not in this format, they will use specialized software to convert it to a vector format.

Machine Cuts the Vinyl

monogramingThey will then prepare a cutting machine by inserting two sheets of vinyl. One layer will be the part that ends up on the fabric; the second layer is the backing. The machine will cut through the vinyl to re-create the vector image.

Weeding

After the machine has finished cutting the design into the vinyl, the monogramming specialist will begin the weeding process. This is done by removing the unwanted pieces of vinyl, essentially the negative spaces of the design.

Heat Transfer

The final step is to apply the vinyl to the fabric or garment by using heat transfer. The garment will be placed on a hot press with the vinyl design on top of it, and then, the press will be closed to apply pressure and heat. This is done to ensure the permanent transfer of the vinyl design to the fabric.
