Sergers and sewing machines complement each other like needle and thread, working best when used together. Though the two perform many similar functions, each also has its own unique capabilities. The Sewing Center in Kalispell, MT, has been supplying area clothiers, designers, and hobbyists with sergers and sewing machines for over 30 years. Aside from selling sewing and embroidery equipment and supplies, they also offer lessons for sewers of all skill levels. Here, the knowledgeable staff explains the differences and similarities between these two valuable machines.

Serger Machine

Although sergers resemble sewing machines, they’re completely different. The primary difference is that a sewing machine requires you to cut the fabric before sewing, whereas a serger cuts the material for you. A serger contains a blade, located just in front of the needles, which cuts the fabric just before the machine sews the pieces together. A serger can create many stitches a sewing machine cannot and creates seams and finishes edges without stretching fabrics, which makes techniques like lettuce edging much easier. Sergers are also about twice as fast as most sewing machines.

Sewing

SergerThough sergers have many advantages, sewing machines are necessary for certain work, including topstitching. Also, with a serger, it’s only possible to sew on the left side of the needles; however, using a sewing machine, you can turn the fabric to sew on either the left or right side. Though it’s most common to use the left side, it’s necessary to use the right for certain projects. It’s also easier to add buttonholes, buttons, and zippers with a sewing machine. Sewing machines also have very long necks in comparison to the short neck of a serger.
