Knowing what to expect before you go to the dentist can reduce any anxiety you may be feeling and create a more comfortable experience overall. At the dental office of Michael J. Minarchek, DDS, in Bethel, OH, their dentists and hygienists prepare their patients by letting them know in advance what they can expect during their next dental exam. Although dental exams and cleanings vary slightly based on each patient’s individual needs, Dr. Minarchek offers a basic overview of a typical visit below.

What to Expect During a Routine Dental Appointment

1. Review

Before starting your dental exam and cleaning, your hygienist will ask you a few questions about your medical history and oral hygiene. These may include questions about any medications you are taking as well as how often you brush and floss.

2. Cleaning

After reviewing your medical history, your hygienist will begin cleaning your teeth. This process involves the removal of plaque and tartar deposits from above and below the gum line. They will then polish and floss your teeth. Your dental cleaning may include a fluoride treatment as well.

3. Examination

After your teeth are clean, the hygienist will examine your teeth for signs of gum disease and tooth decay. They will look for any softening of your tooth enamel as well as swelling of the gums. They will also use a small tool to measure the pockets between your teeth and gums. Deeper pockets are a sign of gum disease.

Dental Exam4. X-Rays

You probably won’t get X-rays done at every visit. Most patients need them just once per year. During the X-ray process, you will bite down on a piece of plastic and the hygienist or assistant will take the images. These will show your tooth roots and jawbone and show any indications of problems.

5. Screenings

After all of the above is complete, the dentist will come in to perform the final dental exam. This examination differs from the one the hygienist completed. Your dentist will review your X-rays and check your jaw for any signs of misalignment. He may also perform an oral cancer screening, depending on your risk. Once this is complete, he can review treatment recommendations for any problems they uncovered.

Dr. Minarchek recommends patients schedule their dental cleaning every six months. As a family dentist, he can treat patients of all ages, providing your entire family with the dental care they need. If it’s been more than six months since your last dental exam, call them at (513) 734-2029 to schedule an appointment. Check out their website for insurance and payment information.
