Ash Wednesday is March 1 and marks the first day of Lent, occurring 40 days before Easter in the Christian calendar. Lent is significant as a period of reflection and prayer before the Easter holiday. During this time, Christians typically give up something for part or all of the days and may appreciate a daily devotional throughout the season.

Fasting is one way Christians put their focus on God and His sacrifice, giving up things including sugar, junk food, soda, cigarettes, meat, fast food, or coffee. They may also choose to abandon activities that will allow them to simplify their lives, such as taking a break from TV, electronics, shopping, or Facebook.

devotionalFocusing on God during Lent is often accomplished by giving up a certain food, vice, or activity, but Christians may also offer their service during this time by helping the needy, tutoring children, donating money to charities, or volunteering in the community. Additionally, this can be a time of forgiveness, for either someone else or yourself. Daily devotional readings are particularly helpful for focusing on God.

The spiritual purpose of Lent allows Christians to fast and clear their lives of distractions so they can more purposefully look to God and remember why Easter is celebrated. Fasting, either food or non-food related, can last for a day, several days, or every day of Lent, while devotional readings can occur daily.
