Gifted and talented test prep can be an overwhelming experience for parents and their children alike. In fact, often parents and students struggle with where to begin and what, specifically, to focus on. With the help of the learning center FasTracKids in New York City, parents can take the guesswork out of their test prep.

What Is the Gifted & Talented Test?

Gifted and Talented Test PrepThe test, open to students ages four to 18, is made up of two components. The Otis-Lennon School Ability Test, or OLSAT®, measures the student’s logical reasoning and their ability to think abstractly. Using shapes and symbols instead of words, the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, or NNAT®, measures spatial and problem-solving skills.

Recommended Activities for Gifted & Talented Test Prep

Practice tests, of course, are excellent ways to help your child prepare, but your child may feel more excited about studying by utilizing fun activities. Take a look at four activities to try.

1. Play Games

Our brains naturally sort and classify objects, which is an important concept for children to grasp at a young age. Make a game out of this skill set by asking your child to name similar objects in their room or when you’re food shopping.

2. Work on Memorization Skills

Did you know traditional matching games build and strengthen memory? You can do this during everyday activities—ask your child to match items in the house, or place items on a table, remove one, and ask which object is missing.

3. Create Flashcards

Create flashcards with your child, focusing on pictures and ideas they struggle with. Understanding classification is a large part of the test.

4. Focus on Activities That Enrich Vocabulary & Testing

Even a simple trip to the zoo can be a fun learning experience that will help your child prepare for the gifted and talented test. Naming the animals expands their memorization skills and builds their vocabulary.
