Proper dental care for children begins at home. In addition to brushing regularly, it’s important to make sure they’re eating the right foods to support good oral health. That’s because food plays such a critical role in the long-term health of those pearly whites.

How can you be sure you’re feeding your child teeth-friendly foods? Here are some healthy options that will benefit a youngster’s dental care regimen and their overall health:

  • dental careCheese: Loaded with calcium, cheese helps build healthy teeth and bones. Chewing cheese also encourages saliva production in the mouth, which helps eliminate those pesky food particles that might otherwise linger on teeth or get stuck between them. Other calcium-building options include yogurt and milk.
  • Fruits: Apples and pears are excellent for oral health. Thanks to their high fiber content, they act as natural teeth-cleaning agents. They also contain a high concentration of water and are a healthier option than fruits that are higher in sugar.
  • Vegetables: Again, water-rich vegetables are an excellent choice for promoting great dental health. Celery behaves as a natural “masseuse” for the gums and gently cleans those spaces that might be tough to reach with a brush. Cucumber is another fibrous option that gives the gums a good workout and triggers the production of saliva to reduce the presence of oral bacteria.
  • Sugar-Free Drinks: Beverages make a big difference, too, especially since children are likely to reach for the juice or chocolate milk when they’re thirsty. Substitute water whenever possible or make it more palatable by adding just a splash of sugar-free juice for flavor.

It’s also helpful to avoid those sticky foods that are so popular with kids, such as raisins and jellybeans. If it’s sticky, it likely contains enough sugar to require an immediate teeth cleaning. If your little one does consume something sweet, have them brush as soon as possible—or at the very least, drink water to rinse some of the particles away.
