Touro College Graduate School of Technology (GST) has a proud history of helping talented students grow into creative, successful professionals. Often, this success happens long before graduation, and such is the case with Touro’s own Steven Jones! Steven entered the Web and Multimedia Design program at Touro GST as a part-time student in September 2013, with the definitive goal of writing and illustrating books for readers of every age. What he didn’t expect, on his road to a 2016-17 graduation, was to become an actual illustrator along the way!
Here, Touro shares Steven’s story more in-depth, and provides some useful pieces of advice from the student himself:
While Steven had some self-described prior knowledge of illustration before enrolling at Touro, his introductory graphic design class with Professor Epstein played an instrumental role in enhancing his abilities. When author Alec Nightingale approached Steven to illustrate the book, Steven was thrilled for the opportunities it presented. Not only was he able to gain hands-on professional experience—and, of course, make money in the process—but working on Alec’s book provided him with invaluable information on how to begin working on publishing books of his own. This is Steven’s first illustrated children’s book, and he plans on completing his studies at Touro before undertaking any other time-consuming opportunities.
As for advice to current Touro students, in his field and others: Steven believes they should all continue chasing their dreams, despite whatever challenges they may face in the process. They may end up reaching them earlier than they ever realized was possible!
