Gravel driveways perform well, whether their purpose is commercial, industrial, or residential. When constructed properly, these types of driveways offer both cost-effective and long-lasting alternatives to other materials. But to make the most of your gravel, you must choose the right kind of driveway aggregate.

In Gales Ferry, CT, B & R Sand & Gravel sells state-approved DOT sand and gravel. They’re the region’s top gravel supplier, and their team helps customers choose the right materials to fit their needs. Below, they highlight some of the key factors you should know about the different sizes of gravel:

  • driveway aggregateBaseball-Sized Gravel: Driveway aggregate that is about four inches in diameter should be used as the bottom layer of your gravel driveway. The individual pieces are roughly the size of baseballs, but they should be angular, not round. As the foundation of the driveway, the large stones facilitate drainage by letting water seep through the cracks. When shopping around, look for crushed aggregate labeled as either #1 angular gravel or #3 stones.
  • Golf Ball-Sized Gravel: The next layer of the driveway should be made up of rocks the size of golf balls. This size is spread directly over the foundation and serves as an intermediate base. With time and pressure, these smaller stones gradually settle between the rocks on the first level to create a solid infrastructure. Gravel suppliers label this gravel as #4 rocks.
  • Marble-Sized Gravel: The top layer of a gravel driveway should consist of small, marble-sized rocks. Look for angular stones labeled as #57 rocks, or dense grade or traffic bound gravel. Traffic bound gravel is made with rock dust that will eventually settle and create a compact surface. As the top layer, you need these stones to fit together but still allow proper drainage.
