Ask a Veterinarian: How to Help Your Pet in an Emergency, Ewa, Hawaii

As a pet owner, you’ll do whatever you need to ensure your companion is happy and healthy. In the event of an emergency, that means heading straight to the veterinarian. With help from a reliable, experienced pet doctor, your furry friend will make the swiftest recovery possible.

Before you get to the veterinary hospital, it’s crucial to do anything you can to make the situation easier on your cat or dog. The steps you can take depend on the nature of the emergency. Remember, during a painful or unsettling experience, even a calm pet can be unusually aggressive.

If your pet shows any of the following symptoms, take advantage of these tips as you wait to see the veterinarian:

Limping

Veterinarian-Waipahu-HIAs gently as possible, inspect their paws and legs for signs of damage—such as open wounds, broken nails, or foreign objects lodged in the skin. The more information you can provide about the potential cause of the limp, the easier it will be for a vet to treat your pet.

Bleeding

If your dog or cat is bleeding, take action immediately. Clean the wound using a mild antibacterial soap and rinse and dry the area thoroughly. Then, apply pressure with a clean cloth or towel. While attempting not to cause additional discomfort, keep pressure on the area for at least three minutes so the blood has time to clot.

Vomiting

It’s not uncommon for pets to vomit on occasion, but when they do, look around for any hazardous foods, medicines, or substances they could have gotten into. Monitor your pet closely, offering them water throughout the next day.

If you don’t notice an improvement within 24 hours, or if your pet’s condition gets worse, contact your veterinarian immediately. They will ensure your companion gets the treatment they need to resume a life of playtime and peaceful naps.
