According to estimates, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders affect over 10 million Americans. These conditions commonly cause temporary or prolonged discomfort in the jaw that can lead to reduced jaw function and debilitating pain.

Dr. Robert Petrtyl, a trusted dentist in Cincinnati, OH, is an expert when it comes to TMJ disorders. For over 30 years, he and his team have been helping patients with TMJ reduce their discomfort. Here, he explains what TMJ disorders are and how they are treated.

TMJ Disorders Defined

TMJ refers to the joints on each side of your jaw that control its motion. They are essential for basic functions like eating and talking. However, disorders associated with TMJ actually involve more than that, as the joints basically affect your whole face.

Symptoms & Causes

There are a number of clear symptoms of TMJ disorders, including radiating pain, muscle stiffness, limited movement, and painful clicking when you open or close your mouth.

Your dentist might not be able to tell you exactly what is causing your TMJ disorder, as there is still some debate over the specific culprits behind the condition. Most dentists agree issues with the joints can be caused by rheumatoid arthritis, an injury to the general jaw area, and frequent teeth clenching. Since the condition affects women more often that men, scientists are also looking for a link between female hormones and TMJ disorders.

Treatment

dentistSince the exact underlying causes of TMJ disorders are still unknown, most experts recommend conservative, non-invasive treatments. Apart from personal steps you can take to address the symptoms, such as applying ice packs to reduce the pain, avoiding extreme jaw movements, and eating soft foods, your dentist may prescribe pain medications and recommend using a stabilization splint or a night guard.

If you find yourself experiencing discomfort in your jaw, consult your dentist right away. In addition to working with patients suffering from TMJ disorders, Dr. Robert Petrtyl offers a variety of general dental services, including teeth cleanings and root canals.
