Well-cared for dentures will last a long time and benefit your oral health. They take a little getting used to, but once you get into a regular cleaning routine, your dentures from the office of Susan Kleier, DMD, will serve you well for many years, as you smile for pictures and enjoy good food. With support from her Lexington, KY, practice, which has provided the area with custom dentures and other dental work for more two decades, you’ll be in especially good hands.

If you’ve been recently fitted for dentures, here’s what you need to know about maintenance:

  • Udenturesse a Specialized Denture Cleaner: Do not use regular toothpaste to clean your dentures, as the active ingredients will scratch and deteriorate them. Instead, use denture cleaner with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

  • Wash Twice a Day: It will probably be easiest to wash your dentures in the morning and evening. Use lukewarm water, as hot water can harm dentures.

  • Keep Moist at All Times: Most dentures should be stored in water or a special denture solution when not in use. Otherwise, they could lose their shape. Some dentures do not require soaking, which your dentist will advise you about if applicable.

  • Clean Your Mouth Before Insertion: To remove plaque buildup and promote circulation, gently clean your mouth with a soft-bristled brush, including your gums, palate, and tongue. Do no use the same brush you use to clean your dentures.

  • Attend Biannual Dentist Visits: Even with good maintenance and care, your dentures may need minor adjustments or part replacements, as the shape of your mouth naturally changes over the years. Be sure to visit your dentist at least twice a year, or your ill-fitting dentures may irritate you.
