As seniors age, the decision to move to an assisted living or even a senior apartment complex is a difficult decision. It is best, if the person or persons making the move, makes the decision of moving as well as where they are moving to. Families want their mom, dad, grandparents to be safe and to be social with others their age, to have nutritious meals and know that there are people around in case an emergency arises. Regardless of how much the family may want their loved one to make the move so they know they are safe, the most successful moves are those where the new tenants are the ones who made the decision to make that move.

On the Hillview campus we are very fortunate to have Carroll Heights, our senior apartments, and Hillview Terrace, a certified RCAC or Residential Care Apartment Complex, both connected to the Hillview Health Care Center, our skilled nursing facility. It is very important to prepare for such a move. Where is the best fit for you or your family member? Are they able to live independently with others around them or do they need some care and assurance that staff are around 24 hours a day? Make phone calls, ask questions, take tours of many places and notice their environments. Consider how the other tenants interact with the staff, how are staff engaging with the tenants? What is most important to you? Getting on a waitlist is crucial. Most do not bind you to anything and you can always tell them you are not interested when they call you with an opening. How long will it take once I am on a waitlist? That is a question that is very difficult to answer. At Carroll Heights and Hillview Terrace, one usually does not leave unless they have to because of an increase need in care. At least then, there are options on our campus where needs can still be met and one does not have to go very far. Knowing the community is a huge benefit if the need should arise and a move needs to be made.
