Bowling has been a part of numerous cultures all over the world for thousands of years. People play it professionally and as a fun family activity. Given its longevity, bowling has developed a history packed with fun and interesting facts that you probably didn’t know.

3 Odd Bowling Facts

1. bowlingIt’s Over 5,000 Years Old

In the 1930s, British archaeologist, Sir Flinders Petrie, discovered objects in an Egyptian child’s grave that he thought could have been used for an early form of bowling. This would put the invention of bowling somewhere around 3200 BC, making it over 5,000 years old. While other lawn variations of bowling were known to arise in Germany in 400 AD and England in 1299, indoor bowling as it is known today would not start until 1840 in New York City.

2.  10-Pin Bowling Was Created to Bypass Laws

While early bowling was known to use anywhere from three to 17 pins, nine became the standard for most games starting in the 15th century. However, as bowling became increasingly associated with gambling, many governments would ban the “nine-pin” games. To get around this law, 10-pin bowling was created.

3. Bowling Balls Can Have Up to 12 Holes

You are probably aware that the standard bowling ball has three holes, but if you’re like most people, then you likely have no idea your ball could have 12 holes. According to the United States Bowling Congress (USBC), you can have up to five holes for gripping purposes (although you have to be able to demonstrate you can use them), one hole for balance purposes, up to five vent holes for each finger and/or thumb, and one mill hole for inspection purposes.
