It’s easy to take light bulbs for granted, as they often last years. Many people simply wait until they burn out before thinking about replacing them. When that time comes, however, wouldn’t you rather replace your bulbs with something that creates a better ambiance, improves your focus, or even saves you money on electricity? If you’re interested in improving your home’s lighting, here’s a brief rundown on what three popular light bulbs are best suited for, and how long they last:

  • light bulbsFluorescent Light Bulbs: Has your dome light recently gone out? If so, the best candidate for the job is probably a fluorescent light bulb, especially if you’re concerned about energy savings. While these bulbs are available in a wide range of brightness levels, most are best suited for ambient light or table lamps that don’t need to be extra bright. Bear in mind that they do contain a negligible amount of mercury, so you cannot dispose of them with normal trash. Fluorescent light bulbs will typically last for up to 10 years.

  • LED Light Bulbs: When you need an intense light that doesn’t quit, LED lights will deliver for up to 10 years before going out. They’re perfect for desk lamps, table lamps, and light fixtures with adjustable settings. While they’re often used outdoors, it's best to keeping LED bulbs inside, where they will stay cool and dry, to ensure a long life. LED light bulbs will probably serve you best as task lighting: anywhere you need to read, write, cook, or otherwise study.

  • Halogen Light Bulbs: Another intensely bright light option is the halogen light bulb. Shining almost as bright as the sun, these bulbs are frequently used in light therapy lamps for treating the winter blues. Despite how much they radiate, they actually use up to 20% less energy than conventional incandescent bulbs. With normal use, a bulb will last about one year, so halogens are really only worth it either for special accent lighting, or task lighting for detailed activities.
