Vinyl fences are incredibly popular because of how easy they are to maintain. When they do require attention, though, what are the best practices? If your vinyl fencing has been losing its glow lately, whether due to algae, mildew, or windblown dust, here’s what General Fence in Elko, NV, has to say about the two main vinyl cleaning techniques. Both are easy enough that, in just one afternoon, your fence will look like new again!

Power Washing

The key behind why vinyl fencing is so stain-resistant is that it’s non-porous. So if it does accumulate a layer of algae or mildew, the problem is only surface-deep and can be easily solved with a power washer. If you do use a power washer, start with lower pressure and stand at least three feet away: You can gradually increase if needed, but too high of pressure could damage your vinyl fence.

Scrubbing With Solution

vinyl fenceDon’t have a power washer? By mixing the right cleaning solution, you can restore your vinyl fencing with a soft scrub brush. Vinyl fence manufacturers recommend either buying a specialized vinyl cleaner, or making your own with a mixture of 1/3 of a cup laundry detergent, 2/3 of a cup trisodium phosphate (a common de-greaser), one quart of bleach, and a gallon of water. After scrubbing the problem areas with this solution, rinse with plain water. If using this method, always test the cleaning product on an inconspicuous part of your fence first.

Vinyl fencing can go for a whole year without any maintenance.
